Here’s the second installment of the video on grinding. In this one, the stones come into play to create flats on the bevel to guide the grinding and reduce the blunt area at the edge.
I’ve got Peter Follansbee back in the shop teaching the “Jennie” chair, always a fun time, but sadly, this week began with some very difficult news. Our good friend Joel Paul, who was going to help Peter teach the class, suffered a terrible accident. He was helping a neighbor cut down a tree for firewood and the tree fell on Joel, pinning him. He suffered serious injuries, crushing many bones and landing him in the ICU. He has a group of dedicated friends helping and pulling for him.
Joel is the reason I moved to the area that I now call my home. I met him when I was looking for space to rent and his warmth and enthusiasm drew me in. He is a talented and dedicated craftsman, you may know him as “The Punkrock Shaker” or “Thirteen Stars Farm” on Instagram. As I’ve spoken to his friends, we all seemed to have had the same thought right after hearing about the accident “He must have been helping someone”. Joel is always there to lend and hand and care for someone in need. We are developing a plan to help Joel through his recovery, I will let you know when we are ready to begin. This is one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve experienced, I hope you will join me in supporting Joel on his road to recovery.
Trying to make sure I understand the lesson here. You’re producing a hollow grind so that you are always indexing on both sides of the grind, producing an edge at a consistent angle, vs the more casual “raise the chisel up a degree or two” which ultimately ends up a higher and higher degree at which point you have to regrind as well.
I don’t really understand why, after getting it sharp, you’d grind again, though. I guess if you already have the grinder out and set up you might as well use it to reduce the size of the flats for the next sharpening session, basically?
Also terrible to hear about your friend Joel. Here’s a link to his instagram for any who may have trouble finding it http://instagram.com/13starsfarm
Oh man, so upset to hear about Joel. Places give him my best wishes. We’ll be happy to promote any fundraising campaign on the podcast.
