The C-Arm class wrapped up and I’m in my usual post class confused state. I just worked a couple of weeks of intense focus and my body and mind have no idea how to handle a day off. It normally takes a couple of days for me to readjust. The class ran very smoothly (with the very capable help of David Douyard) and Peter F. did a great job on his chair. I have lots of photos of him using a cordless drill, but I’m saving them for blackmail material. He wrote a post about his experience on his Substack.
I often think about how much I admire my students spending their time and resources to come to my shop and work their butts off to make a chair. It’s a special person that seeks growth and effort in place of languid relaxation. Even more so in someone like Follansbee, who is clearly established as a craftsman in a way that requires him to merely stay on his path. Instead, he chose to jump in and take on the role of the student. We had a great time conversing about the experience from both teacher and student views, I learned a lot listening to his perspective. I’ll be mulling this week over for a long time.
