A while back my pal Greg Pennington was challenging folks to a bobbin leg turning race to find out who was fastest. I didn’t participate then, but doesn’t mean I didn’t wonder how I’d match up. So, here is a video of me turning a bobbin leg that runs 3:12, so there’s my answer.
As I mention in the video, the Galbert Caliper is back in stock. We have a few on hand and will have lots more when some new decals arrive in a week or so. I got a call the other day from Caleb James telling me that he had featured the caliper in his video for the Wood Whisperer and I might get slammed with orders, so if you have been wanting one, it might be a good idea to get one now. Caleb said that he bought his caliper so early in his turning practice that he’s never measured diameters another way, so it had to be used in the video. That made me feel both proud and old.
In case you aren’t aware, I have a video on turning with Lost Art Press. It’s about 4 hours of instruction, because that’s all I know, the rest is practice. How to practice is key to getting better at turning, and I address it in detail in the video. Squeaking out a few furniture parts doesn’t offer much help, but short sessions, just a few minutes at a time, spaced over days gets the movements down. I’m a firm believer that the time between sessions is as critical as what happens during them. Long turning practice sessions tend to lead to fussing about rather than decisive movement, which is the actual key to build consistency and skill. Come back fresh, take your shot and live to turn another day!
Very helpful advice, Peter, especially about how to practice. Thanks!
Yikes Pete. I am glad I am not inclined to suicidal ideation. The times of my leg turning are never counted in minutes or I would be generating a lot of funny looking firewood. I am a slow and steady kind of turner.
