I’ve always been more interested in shaping wood than joining it. I suspect the obsession some woodworkers have with joinery is due to the chance it offers to make complex shapes in wood, as opposed to the wide flat expanses required of tables, doors, cabinets etc… The relative simplicity of round mortise and tenons suits me fine as a means to connect all the parts that I’ve shaped. Though in recent years, I’ve learned to square up a few that need to resist rotation… it’s important to challenge yourself.
