Yikes Pete. I am glad I am not inclined to suicidal ideation. The times of my leg turning are never counted in minutes or I would be generating a lot of funny looking firewood. I am a slow and steady kind of turner.
Wonderful advice as always, young pup! 😼😼 I have watched the video twice already -- it is absorbing and its attention to stage and sequence, as is true of all your teaching, makes for very effective learning.
After you learn opposing hand it’s hardly a problem transitioning to your dominant hand. I really should thank you. It happened during COVID so I had all the time in the world to train. Then one day I was watching another video you had made and you mentioned that you were left handed. I dropped everything and went to the lathe and sure as I’m right handed I picked it up like it was second nature. Thanks Pete.
I learned to turn from those LAP videos and have never used any other measuring device. The funny part is that you taught me to turn left handed because I didn’t know you weren’t right handed. So, I then went back and learned right handed. Great practice!
Well it turned out in my favor because I don’t even realize what hand I’m using as I turn. It’s just the optimal hand for the job. But, yeah it’s really funny when you think about it.
Likewise, I've never measured diameters another way and every time I pick it up these days I realize how much I rely on it - so much so that I just picked up a spare/emergency one.
Have your video from LAP, got shortly after you made it. Great vid on spindle turning, using the skew chisel and taking your time. Learned alot from you Peter and am also an early adopter of your caliper - use it on every spindle I turn.
Very helpful advice, Peter, especially about how to practice. Thanks!

Just purchased the Galbert Caliper but never got an email confirmation. Just wanted to make sure you got the order and that I’m on the list!
Yes, we got the order!
What width of parting tool do you use with your caliper? Thanks
I like the 1/8" diamond parting tool

I always forget to mention that when I teach turning and invariably, someone will notice how tough it is to do it like I do!
That’s really funny about the left hand right handed thing Todd.

Thanks for the comment, I'm happy to hear that you found the video useful!
By "the video" I do mean the 4 hours available from Lost Art Press -- but the short video posted here is also a wonderful treat!
